DISCOVERING OUR PURPOSE

Session One/Small Group Questions

INTRO: Have you ever thought about your life beyond this life? If you could give your life a movie title, what would you call it? Why? What song would play on your life’s movie trailer? Why?

SCRIPTURE: For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.
2 Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, 3 because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. 4 For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. 5 Now the one who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.

6 Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. 7 For we live by faith, not by sight. 8 We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. 9 So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it. 10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad. – 2 Corinthians 5:1-10 (NLT)

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.- Colossians 3:2 (NIV)

IDEA:

  •   This life isn’t our #GOALS.

  •   What you “wear” now is nothing compared to the outfit God has in store

    for you.

  •   What you see [here] is NOT what you get [in God’s kingdom].

  •   This earth is not our home.

  •   Our purpose is to PLEASE God with our lives on earth.

ASK:

  1. Have you ever broken a bone? What has been your absolute worst injury? How can physical aches and pains remind you that God has a bigger goal than just life on earth?

  2. Describe a time you felt completely out of place. How can a life on earth following Jesus (at school, at home, in the world) feel like that?

  3. Have you ever felt like this world is pretty messed up? What made you think that? Watching the news? The way people treated you or someone else? Hearing a friend tell their life story? How do you think this world will compare with heaven?

  4. What is the most uncomfortable outfit you’ve ever had to wear? Maybe your parents forced you to wear something for family photos or perhaps it was a uniform you had to wear for band or a sport, what was that one outfit you couldn’t wait to change out of? How is that like the earthly “outfit” Paul is describing in this passage? How can living on earth feel uncomfortable at times?

  5. It’s easy to get caught up in life right now instead of focusing our minds on what is to come. What does your mind tend to get caught up on the most in this life? What could you do to focus it more on long lasting things of the future?

  6. According to 2 Corinthians 5:9, why are we here? What is part of our purpose? That is, what is our goal, whether we are wearing our “earthly” bodies or our heavenly ones? How can we please God?

  7. What we do in this life matters to God. How does knowing that change your everyday decisions?

DO:

 Take a piece of paper and draw a line down the middle. On one side, write the top 5 things that your mind is the most focused on right now (grades, friends, sports, etc.). On the other side, write 5 ways you could please God in those things.
